“Okay…I have no idea what we’re going to play.
I won’t be able to tell you what it is until it happens…”
My favorite definition of “riff” and the one that is most unlike my personality reads: “a rapid energetic often improvised verbal outpouring.” Thanks Merriam-Webster. For this perfectionist ENFJ personality, I am usually quite measured, someone who enjoys generous processing time, and one who steers clear of any type of participatory improv…thus, riffing (in the MW sense) on anything is not a part of my daily routine.
So, doing what I am about to do is a risk for me.
It’s one that borrows from the risk of my good friend and colleague, Bo Adams.
This TED Talk by Stefon Harris has been swirling in my head for quite some time. It’s where the opening quote of this blog post (and idea) originates. “I have no idea what we’re going to play. I won’t be able to tell you what it is until it happens…” Mistakes. Improv. Riffs. Opportunity. Change. What does this mean for us in schools?
What if I took a line-of-flight idea and a learning challenge of Bo’s and let it inspire my own? What if I let his CHANGEd 60-60-60 posts settle in my mind for only a brief bit (less than a day), and then offered my improvised verbal outpouring?
So, here we go…if I can last 60 days, I will. I’m limiting my posts to less than 100 words. Reflecting on what he shares. Riffing on his words.

I’m limiting my posts to less than 100 words. Ha. NotSoMuch for this English major. After two days of riffing, I accept failure. Instead, I shift: I’m limiting my posts to what I can write in thirty minutes or less.
